Weird?

Today I went to my cousin's house for a family dinner. As I ate I looked around and saw that everybody in my family was mostly thin. I pondered upon this and thought about the obesity problems in America. I find it extremely weird that most Colombian and almost all South Americans are particularly thin, there are very very few people who are over weight in countries like those. Thisis weird due to the fact that in South American countries, and in Colombia for sure most of our food is deep fried. If it is not fried it contains a ridiculous amount of carbs. The food is amazing and therefore you tend to eat a lot of it. So why are there not more weight problems in South America if they are constantly eating foods filled with grease or carbs? Yes, in the U.S trans fat is very common in foods like McDonalds, but that is not a Christmas or holiday type food. It is a once in a while meal in comparison to these fat-filled foods served at family dinners like the one I went to tonight. It is so good, but it is so abstruse to me that over weight people are rare.

I've noticed this too. what's even wierder is that when I went to colombia about two years ago all I did was eat, I ate normal food, and lots of junk food, and evry type of food that was offered to me, and the wierd thing is that somehow I came back skinnier. that was really wierd.

The most obvious reason came to my head of why South Americans are skinnier than Americans when I read your post. I thought about the food, and how healthy it was. I never knew that most South American food is fried.

One reason that makes most logical sense to me is all of the walking in South America. When I visited South America, the popular transportation to a place was walking. I was used to it, because in Greece we also walk every where. Americans tend to use motor vehicles a lot ore, which then leads to less physical activity, and then eventually obesity.

I think that one of the reasons for this is that in many of our countries, and I know in Venezuela and Colombia as well as many other countries in Latin America, the food is simply more natural. Because there are so many laws for food and sanitation, it's practically impossible to actually find "fresh" or natural food. Everything is usually passed through so many processes that in the end in just ends up being as plastic and unhealthy as any other kind of food out there. However, we don't that in our countries. Not that we don't have laws on sanitation at all, but there are much fewer ones, so by making the foods a lot more natural they are also much healthier. It's the same case in Europe. You rarely see a European person that is fat or just overweight.
